Ten materials defining 2026 interiors: what each one does to light
The same ten materials keep turning up in 2026 interiors: Murano glass, linen, warm wood, Roman clay, bold marble, travertine, mohair velvet, zellige, alabaster and patina. It is a good list. It is also an incomplete one, because half of these are not things you buy. Roman clay is not a product, it is a decision about what a wall should feel like when you walk past it. Patina is not a finish you order, it is what happens to brass if you leave it alone.
What the lists rarely say is that each of these materials is doing a specific job to the light in the room, and the jobs are not the same. Alabaster and mohair velvet are at opposite ends of the same physics. Sort the list by what each one does to light rather than by how fashionable it is, and it stops being a mood board and starts being useful — because you can only put so many of each kind in one room before it stops working.
Three things a material can do to light
Every surface in a room falls into one of three categories, and the trend list contains all three without ever naming them.
- Transmit. Light passes through the material and comes out changed — softer, warmer, spread. Alabaster and Murano glass do this. These materials can be light sources.
- Hold. Light lands on the surface and stays there, warming it. Travertine, marble, wood, Roman clay and zellige do this. They cannot be light sources, but they are what makes a room look lit.
- Absorb. Light goes in and does not come back. Linen absorbs gently and evenly. Mohair velvet absorbs almost completely, which is exactly why rooms with a lot of it read darker than the lumens say they should.
Patina is the outlier. It is the only material here that keeps changing after the room is finished.
Alabaster: the stone that becomes the light
Alabaster is a fine-grained gypsum, soft enough to be cut thin, and at that thickness it stops being opaque. Put a bulb behind it and the whole piece glows honey-warm from the inside, veining and all — no visible source, no hot spot, no glare. This is the reason it has been used for lighting since antiquity and the reason it is back now: it is the one stone that solves diffusion by itself, with no shade, no lens and no frosted glass in front of it.
The Nebel Wall Lamp is the plainest version of that idea — a cylindrical alabaster shade on a slim brass arm, the light passing through the stone rather than bouncing off it, so the wash fills a room without a bright point anywhere in it. The Hausen Wall Lamp does the same in a globe, and the Schouwen Wall Lamp stretches it into a tall rectangular panel that lights a whole vertical strip of wall. Murano glass: light broken up before it reaches the room
Murano glass is the other transmitter, and it works the opposite way to alabaster. Alabaster spreads light evenly. Murano breaks it into pieces. Because each element is blown by hand, no two are the same thickness or exactly the same colour, so light passing through a stack of them refracts at slightly different angles and arrives in the room as depth rather than brightness.
The Korning Chandelier is built entirely on that effect — hand-blown Murano leaves in green and amber layered around a stainless-steel core, so the light travels through and between the glass instead of straight down. Travertine: warmth on the surface, not through it
Travertine gets grouped with alabaster constantly and it should not be. It is a sedimentary stone, dense and full of small natural cavities, and it does not thin down to translucency. Light does not pass through travertine so much as sit on it — warming the surface, catching in the pitting, holding the grain. A travertine fixture reads first as an object with weight and only second as something switched on.
That is the trade-off worth understanding: travertine looks considered with the light off, which a glowing shade never quite does. Bold marble: veining that only appears when it is lit
The move in 2026 is away from quiet white marble and towards stone with an argument in it — rosso, green, heavily veined, the kind that used to be considered too much. What makes bold marble work in a room is entirely a lighting question, because veining is a low-contrast pattern and low-contrast patterns disappear under flat overhead light. Light a red marble counter from directly above and you get a dark red slab. Light it from an angle, or from a source close to it, and the veins turn up.
Marble can also be cut thin enough to glow, and that is where it overlaps with alabaster. Warm wood: grain needs light along it, not at it
Walnut, oak and ash are all back, and warm wood is the material most often ruined by the lighting around it. Grain is directional texture. Light hitting it head-on flattens it into a brown surface; light running along it at a shallow angle raises every line. This is why the same walnut cabinet can look expensive in one apartment and flat in another with no difference in the wood at all.

Roman clay: the finish that takes glare out of a whole wall
Roman clay is a lime-based plaster applied by hand, and its appeal is not really the colour — it is that the surface is minutely uneven and completely matte. A painted wall, even in a flat finish, still has enough specularity to throw a visible bright patch back at you when a lamp sits near it. Clay plaster does not. It takes the light and returns it as a soft gradient, which is why rooms finished in it photograph as though the light is coming from the walls themselves.
It is a decision rather than a purchase, and it has one consequence worth planning for: a matte clay wall eats more light than paint does, so a room finished in it usually needs one more source than you think. Zellige: the one material that needs light across it
Zellige is hand-cut Moroccan tile, glazed and fired so that no two pieces are the same depth of colour and the surface ripples slightly from tile to tile. That irregularity is the entire point, and it is invisible under a ceiling light. Zellige needs raking light — a source mounted close to the surface and throwing along it, so the ripples cast their own small shadows and the wall reads as a texture rather than a colour.
A wall light that washes up and down does this well. Linen: the oldest diffuser there is
Linen is on every 2026 list as a textile, but in lighting it has been doing one job for a century: absorbing a fraction of the light and letting the rest through as an even, slightly warm glow. A linen shade is a low-tech diffuser and still one of the best, because the weave scatters light in a way that frosted acrylic approximates rather than matches. It also ages honestly, which is more than can be said for most shade materials.

Mohair velvet: a light sink, and the reason a room reads dark
Mohair velvet is the most demanding material on this list and nobody warns you about it. Velvet's pile stands up off the backing, so light entering it bounces between fibres and is absorbed rather than returned. A large mohair sofa can swallow a meaningful share of a room's light. If a room has felt underlit since the sofa arrived, this is usually why, and adding a brighter bulb overhead does not fix it — overhead light hits the pile straight on, which is the angle that returns least.
What velvet actually needs is light raking across it from the side, at roughly seat height, which is the only angle that makes the pile read as depth instead of a dark shape. Patina: the only material here that is not finished yet
Patina is not a colour, it is time. Unlacquered solid brass oxidises in contact with air and hands, darkening unevenly, staying bright where it is touched most. That is why it is on trend lists in a year when everything else is about texture and age: it is the one material that is different in year three than it was on the day it arrived. The catch is that most "antique brass" on the market is a lacquered finish printed to look like the end state, and lacquer is exactly what stops the process.

How to actually use the list
Ten materials is more than any one room wants. The working rule is to pick one from each group and let them do different jobs: one transmitter as the light itself, one holder as the surface it lands on, one absorber to stop the room ringing. Alabaster sconces on a Roman clay wall above a linen sofa is that formula, and so is a Murano pendant over a walnut table in a room with velvet chairs. What does not work is stacking two transmitters — an alabaster pendant and a glass chandelier in one room read as competing light sources with nothing between them — or filling a room with holders and absorbers and no transmitter at all, which is how a room full of beautiful materials ends up feeling flat.
Half of these materials are not purchases. They are decisions about what a surface should do when the light reaches it.
The other thing worth saying: none of these are new. Alabaster lighting is ancient, zellige is centuries old, linen shades are a century old, and brass has been patinating since brass existed. What has changed is that rooms are being built around warm neutrals and visible texture again, and every material on this list rewards that with something a manufactured surface cannot give — an unrepeatable grain, an uneven glaze, a glow with veining inside it, a finish that keeps moving. That is the actual 2026 trend. The ten materials are just where it shows up first.
