Travertine and alabaster: the stone lighting is warming up to

Travertine and alabaster are both stone, both quarried rather than manufactured, and both are turning up in lighting again after a long run of glass and polished metal. Neither is new to building or sculpture, but neither has been asked to do the specific job a lamp does until fairly recently. What's interesting is that the two stones do that job in almost opposite ways — and knowing the difference is the fastest way to pick the right one for a room.

Start with what each material actually is. Alabaster is a fine-grained form of gypsum, soft enough to carve thin, and it has been used for lighting and vessels since antiquity for one reason: light gets through it. Cut a slab down to a workable thickness and it stops being opaque. It goes honeyed, sometimes with a faint pink or amber cast, and the veining running through the stone becomes visible from the inside when a bulb sits behind it. Travertine is different stone entirely — a sedimentary rock built up in mineral-rich water, dense and full of small natural cavities. It doesn't thin down to translucency the way alabaster does. Light doesn't pass through a travertine shade so much as sit on it, warming the surface and catching in the pitted texture and grain rather than glowing through from the other side.

What each stone actually does with light

This is the part worth being precise about, because the two get lumped together in a lot of lighting copy and they really shouldn't be. An alabaster piece lit in a dim room reads as a light source — the whole shade takes on a soft, even glow, almost like the stone itself is generating it rather than housing a bulb. The light comes from within, but what you notice is the stone — the grain, the small natural holes, the way the surface goes warm rather than luminous. Why it's showing up in rooms right now

The current appetite for both stones traces back to the same shift that's been reshaping interiors for a few years: rooms built around warm neutrals, natural texture, and materials that show some age instead of hiding it. Japandi and coastal interiors both lean on the same palette — sand, clay, bone, warm white — and stone lighting sits inside that palette rather than fighting it, the way a chrome or black-metal fixture would. Travertine in particular has become a kind of shorthand for that whole look; it shows up in flooring, countertops, and now light fixtures because it photographs the way the rooms themselves are meant to feel — worn-in, sun-warmed, unforced.

There's also a simpler reason stone is having its moment: it ages in public. A cast resin or painted metal shade looks the same on day one and day one thousand, and eventually that sameness starts to look cheap. Stone doesn't offer that kind of consistency, and increasingly that's the point. The veining in an alabaster shade or the pitting across a travertine base isn't a flaw to be sanded out — it's the record of where the piece came from, which is exactly what a room full of manufactured, repeatable objects is missing.

None of this means the two stones are interchangeable, or that either one is simply "the nicer option." They're suited to different jobs, and it's worth choosing on that basis rather than on the material's name alone.

  • Alabaster glows evenly across the whole shade when lit; travertine stays a surface, warming at the source rather than lighting up throughout.
  • Alabaster reads well close to eye level — bedside, hallway, above a console — where its translucency is easy to see and appreciate.
  • Travertine reads better at a slight distance or in groupings, where its grain and base texture register the way a piece of furniture would.
  • If you want a fixture that disappears into daylight and only becomes noticeable at night, alabaster does that more convincingly.
  • If you want a fixture that looks considered even switched off, travertine holds its own with the light off in a way a glowing shade can't.

Put simply: alabaster is the material to reach for when you want the light itself to feel soft and organic, and travertine is the one to reach for when you want the object doing the lighting to feel like it belongs to the room whether it's switched on or not. Neither is trying to outshine the other — they're solving different problems with the same basic idea, which is that a light fixture can be made from something that was never meant to be a light fixture in the first place, and can be better for it.
