The Object

Round on squarea balanced pair

The Larva sets a gently rounded brass knob against a simple rectangular backplate, letting one soft shape sit inside one structured one. Solid brass gives it real weight; the backplate frames the form and protects the door beneath it. A composed detail, not a loud one.
Why you'll love it
  • Solid brass with reassuring weight
  • Round knob framed by a rectangular backplate
  • Backplate protects the door surface
  • Suits contemporary and classic millwork
  • Three finishes: vintage brass, black, nickel
Details

No wiring here — just careful measuring, drilling, and mounting. Mortice locks take a bit more patience than a simple knob.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — surface installation on doors, drawers, or cabinetry; check your product's dimensions for placement and drilling points

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead), drill and drill bits, Allen key
  • Tape measure, pencil, level
  • Chisel (for mortice lock installation)
  • Screws and anchors, safety goggles

Step by step

  1. Cabinet hardware — mark drilling points — use a tape measure and pencil; a template helps for uniformity across multiple pieces.
  2. Cabinet hardware — drill holes — use a bit matched to the screw diameter, keeping the drill straight.
  3. Cabinet hardware — mount — insert screws from inside the cabinet or drawer, secure the hardware on the front face, and tighten without overtightening.
  4. Cabinet hardware — align and inspect — confirm straightness and spacing before fully securing.
  5. Thumb lock or dummy handle — confirm orientation — determine left- or right-hand door swing and adjust as needed.
  6. Thumb lock or dummy handle — mark installation height — typically 36–38 inches from the floor to the handle center; align the mounting plate.
  7. Thumb lock or dummy handle — drill and attach — drill pilot holes and secure the backplate and handle with the included screws. Dummy handles install directly, no latch mechanism.
  8. Thumb lock only — install the strike plate — mark the latch location on the door frame, chisel a recess if needed, and screw the strike plate in.
  9. Mortice lock — cut the mortice pocket — use a chisel and drill to create a cavity in the door edge, following the provided measurements.
  10. Mortice lock — insert the lock body — fit it into the cavity and attach through the faceplate with screws.
  11. Mortice lock — install the handle — align the spindle through the lock, attach handles on both sides, and tighten with a screwdriver or Allen key.
  12. Mortice lock — install the cylinder (if applicable) — insert the key cylinder and secure with the cylinder screw from the door edge.
  13. Mortice lock — mount the strike plate — align with the latch mechanism and secure to the door frame.

Good to know

  • Double-check measurements before drilling.
  • Use a level for consistent alignment across multiple units.
  • If you're unfamiliar with mortice installation, consult a locksmith or professional.
  • Make sure all moving parts operate smoothly before final tightening.
  • Dummy handles are decorative or pull-only — they don't engage latches or locks.

On the form

Backplatea frame, not an accent

The rectangular backplate does real work here: it shields the door surface from wear where the knob is gripped and turned. Its clean, structured lines also give the round knob something to sit against, sharpening the contrast between the two shapes. Brass carries both with the same warm finish.

Frequently asked

Solid brass, giving it a genuine weight and warmth that plated or hollow alternatives can't quite match at this size.

Three options: vintage brass, black, and nickel, each finished to complement different cabinetry tones and hardware.

Yes, its rounded profile sits comfortably in the hand, and the solid brass build feels steady and secure with every turn.

It frames the knob visually while also protecting the door surface underneath from scuffs and wear over years of daily use.

Kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, bathroom vanities, and general furniture all suit its understated, versatile scale.

Yes, its clean lines and restrained form read as contemporary, especially in the black or nickel finishes.

Yes, particularly in the vintage brass finish, which pairs naturally with more traditional millwork and cabinetry.
