Installation Guide

No wiring here — just careful measuring, drilling, and mounting. Mortice locks take a bit more patience than a simple knob.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — surface installation on doors, drawers, or cabinetry; check your product's dimensions for placement and drilling points

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead), drill and drill bits, Allen key
  • Tape measure, pencil, level
  • Chisel (for mortice lock installation)
  • Screws and anchors, safety goggles

Step by step

  1. Cabinet hardware — mark drilling points — use a tape measure and pencil; a template helps for uniformity across multiple pieces.
  2. Cabinet hardware — drill holes — use a bit matched to the screw diameter, keeping the drill straight.
  3. Cabinet hardware — mount — insert screws from inside the cabinet or drawer, secure the hardware on the front face, and tighten without overtightening.
  4. Cabinet hardware — align and inspect — confirm straightness and spacing before fully securing.
  5. Thumb lock or dummy handle — confirm orientation — determine left- or right-hand door swing and adjust as needed.
  6. Thumb lock or dummy handle — mark installation height — typically 36–38 inches from the floor to the handle center; align the mounting plate.
  7. Thumb lock or dummy handle — drill and attach — drill pilot holes and secure the backplate and handle with the included screws. Dummy handles install directly, no latch mechanism.
  8. Thumb lock only — install the strike plate — mark the latch location on the door frame, chisel a recess if needed, and screw the strike plate in.
  9. Mortice lock — cut the mortice pocket — use a chisel and drill to create a cavity in the door edge, following the provided measurements.
  10. Mortice lock — insert the lock body — fit it into the cavity and attach through the faceplate with screws.
  11. Mortice lock — install the handle — align the spindle through the lock, attach handles on both sides, and tighten with a screwdriver or Allen key.
  12. Mortice lock — install the cylinder (if applicable) — insert the key cylinder and secure with the cylinder screw from the door edge.
  13. Mortice lock — mount the strike plate — align with the latch mechanism and secure to the door frame.

Good to know

  • Double-check measurements before drilling.
  • Use a level for consistent alignment across multiple units.
  • If you're unfamiliar with mortice installation, consult a locksmith or professional.
  • Make sure all moving parts operate smoothly before final tightening.
  • Dummy handles are decorative or pull-only — they don't engage latches or locks.

Curve meets edge — a quiet contrast

The Durcal's lever curves gently where a hand naturally rests, while the rosette behind it holds a crisp, square geometry. That pairing of soft and sharp is what gives the handle its composed, considered look. Cast in zinc alloy and finished in gold or black, it reads substantial rather than decorative.

Innovative engineering. Intelligent design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What material is the Durcal Door Handle made from?

Solid zinc alloy, chosen for its weight and durability. At 870g per set, it carries a reassuring heft that feels substantial with every turn, not a hollow or flimsy touchpoint.

What finishes are available for this Handle and Lock?

Two finishes: a warm gold and a deep black. Both are designed to hold their tone through everyday use and pair naturally with modern or transitional interior hardware.

What is included in the package?

Everything needed for a complete install — two rosettes, a hex key, connecting and self-tapping screws, four mounting bases, and a full lock body with strike plate. Nothing extra to source separately.

Where can this Handle and Lock be installed?

It's built for interior doors — bedrooms, bathrooms, and private office spaces suit it especially well, anywhere a privacy thumb lock is useful.

Does the design support comfortable daily use?

Yes, the tapered lever and ergonomic grip are shaped for a natural, comfortable hold, and the smooth zinc-alloy surface stays pleasant to the touch through repeated daily use.

Is the construction suitable for frequent use?

Yes — solid zinc alloy construction is built to handle the wear of a high-traffic interior door without loosening or degrading over years of regular use.

What style of interiors does it complement?

Modern and transitional interiors both suit the Durcal well. Its clean square rosette and understated lever integrate easily alongside other minimal architectural hardware in the home.

What makes the backplate design distinctive?

The crisp square rosette contrasts against the lever's soft taper, giving the handle a composed, considered look rather than a purely functional or purely decorative one.

Are there different handle shapes available?

The Durcal comes in this tapered lever profile with a square rosette. If you're looking for a different silhouette, our team can point you to related cabinet and door hardware options.

Is this Handle and Lock suitable for modern architectural themes?

Yes, its minimal profile and clean geometry were designed specifically to integrate with modern and transitional architectural detailing throughout a home.
