The Object

Brassdressed in cowhide

The Vik Knob sets a brass cylinder inside a cowhide sleeve — smooth in the hand, with a pattern on every piece that no other knob shares. The brass gives it weight; the hide gives it warmth. Five colours from pink to black; fits standard doors, drawers, cabinets, and wardrobes.
Why you'll love it
  • Solid brass core — weighty and built for decades of daily use
  • Cowhide wrap — each knob carries its own unique pattern
  • Five colours: pink, beige, black, blue, green
  • Fits doors, drawers, cabinets, and wardrobes
  • Easy installation — standard fitting, no specialist tools
Details

Includes the solid-brass plate, toggle mechanism, and mounting hardware. A straightforward swap for an existing switch — power off, match the wires, screw the plate back on.

Step by step

  1. Turn off the power at your breaker or fuse box.
  2. Remove the old cover plate — unscrew it and set it aside.
  3. Take out the old switch — unscrew it from the box and ease it out to reach the wiring.
  4. Disconnect the wires — loosen the screws, or if back-inserted, cut and strip the ends.
  5. Wire the new toggle — live to the brass/black screw, neutral to silver (if your switch uses one), ground to the green screw. Tighten each.
  6. Secure the switch — tuck the wires back, align the toggle, fasten with the included screws.
  7. Fit the brass plate over the switch and screw it in.
  8. Power back on at the panel.
  9. Test — toggle up and down; the light or device should switch cleanly.

On the detail

Cowhide over brassnothing quite the same

Each piece of cowhide is cut from a different part of the hide, so the pattern of markings is unique to every knob. The brass core is machined to a consistent diameter, then the hide is fitted and secured so the surface tension stays true. Over time the hide develops a patina from handling — oils from the hand slowly warm the colour of the grip.

Cowhide markings differ on every knob — no two from the same part of the hide.

Frequently asked

Yes — the Vik's brass core and natural hide wrap suit both period interiors and contemporary ones. The simple cylinder form reads as quietly traditional; the cowhide adds a material interest that works across eras.

A solid brass core machined to a consistent diameter, wrapped in cowhide leather. Brass was chosen for its density and durability; cowhide for its natural variation and the way it improves with handling.

Each piece of hide is cut from a different section, so the pattern of natural markings — spots, tone gradations — is unique to that knob. No two Vik Knobs look identical, even within the same colour order.

Yes — the core is machined from solid brass, not plated zinc. It will not crack, bend, or corrode under normal indoor use, and it gives the Vik a satisfying weight in the hand.

The Vik is sized at 3 cm diameter and 7.2 cm height — compact enough for small drawers, substantial enough for cabinet doors. The smooth cowhide surface is warm and non-slip under dry hands.

The cowhide wrap is the differentiator — the natural pattern on each piece of hide is determined by the animal and the section of skin it came from. No dye or printing is applied to simulate this; the variation is real and inherent to the material.

Standard cabinet knob installation — thread the included screw through the cabinet door or drawer face from the inside and tighten into the base of the Vik. No specialist tools required. A basic screwdriver is enough.

Significantly for the detail level — cabinet hardware is a small thing touched dozens of times a day. Replacing a plain knob with the Vik adds material interest and a tactile quality that reads as considered without calling attention to itself.

The cowhide used in the Vik is a by-product of the food industry — not sourced for leather alone. If you have specific certification requirements for your project, contact us before ordering and we will provide sourcing documentation.

The brass core has no coating to wear — it is solid metal throughout. The cowhide develops a patina over time from handling, which typically deepens and enriches the colour rather than degrading it. Nava ships free worldwide with a 1-year warranty.
