The Object

Set into the groundlit by the sun

The Shale In-Ground Light presses into garden soil or lawns on its stake — no wiring, no electrician. The 2V solar panel charges the 600mAh battery through the day, and a light-control sensor switches it on at dusk and off at dawn automatically. IP65-rated ABS and PC keep rain, dew, and frost from doing any damage. Sixteen LEDs, choice of warm or white light, up to eight hours per charge.
Why you'll love it
  • Solar powered — no wiring, just stake and sunlight
  • Auto dusk-to-dawn — sensor switches it on and off
  • IP65 waterproof — all-weather, year-round outdoor use
  • 16 LEDs — warm or white, choose at order
  • 8 hours per charge — through a full evening into night
Details

The install depends on your mount type — trimless, recessed, semi-recessed, surface, or track — so confirm which one you have before you start.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — trimless, recessed, semi-recessed, surface-mounted, or track-mounted; confirm the type in your product listing
  • Ceilings — most models suit drywall; some also work with concrete or drop ceilings, check the technical documentation
  • Dimming — many designs dim when paired with compatible drivers and wall dimmers
  • Power — hardwired, connects directly to a ceiling electrical junction
  • Trimless — may need professional finishing or flush-mount drywall work
  • Track — installs onto a compatible rail system; check your product's specification for track type

What you'll need

  • Drill, keyhole or drywall saw (for recessed or trimless)
  • Screwdriver, voltage tester, wire stripper
  • Wire nuts (included with most fixtures), screws and wall anchors (for surface mounting)
  • Level, measuring tape or pencil

Step by step

  1. Turn off the power — at the breaker panel, and confirm with a voltage tester.
  2. Prepare the ceiling opening (recessed and trimless only) — mark your opening with the provided template and cut carefully with a drywall saw or hole cutter. Trimless models need deeper space and extra setup for a seamless finish.
  3. Install the mounting hardware or fixture housing — recessed and trimless designs insert into the ceiling cavity and secure with spring clips or fasteners (trimless may need joist framing); semi-recessed fixtures partially install per the included instructions; surface-mounted downlights attach directly with screws and wall anchors; track fixtures need a compatible track system first, then lock into place.
  4. Connect the wiring — black to black, white to white, green or bare to ground. Secure each with a wire nut and tuck neatly back into the housing or box.
  5. Final assembly — trimless fixtures get mudded and feathered into the ceiling plane before painting; recessed, semi-recessed, and surface fixtures finish by twisting or snapping the trim or body into place; track lights get positioned and rotated along the rail after locking in.
  6. Restore power and test — use the wall switch or dimmer to verify proper operation.

Good to know

  • Professional installation is recommended for trimless or recessed downlights, especially with mudding or insulation involved.
  • Follow local electrical codes and regulations.
  • Use only compatible drivers and dimmers for your fixture.
  • Keep safe spacing from insulation in ceiling cavities to prevent overheating.

How it works

Solar charges by daysensor lights it by night

The Shale In-Ground Light uses a 2V, 0.2W polysilicon panel to capture daylight and store it in a 1.2V Ni-MH battery. As daylight fades, the built-in sensor detects the change and switches the 16-LED array on automatically. Full charge takes 6–8 hours in direct sunlight; a full charge gives around 8 hours of light. No switch to remember, no cable to run.

Frequently asked

Yes — the Shale In-Ground Light carries an IP65 rating, meaning it's fully protected against water jets and dust. Rain, overnight dew, and seasonal frost won't damage it.

Up to 8 hours on a full charge — enough to take you from dusk through the middle of the night. Runtime may be shorter on overcast days where the solar panel can't reach full capacity.

Very — assemble the stake, push it into the ground, and place the light unit on top. No wiring, no electrician, no tools required. The Shale In-Ground Light is designed for self-installation.

A 1.2V 600mAh Ni-MH (nickel–metal hydride) battery — a chemistry designed for repeated solar charge cycles, more durable than standard alkaline cells over time.

Yes — specify warm white or cool white at order. Both use the same 16-LED array and produce the same 8-hour runtime.

Sixteen — enough to produce a visible pool of ground-level light around the fixture, suitable for pathways, garden edges, and landscape features.

Yes. A built-in light-control sensor detects the drop in ambient light at dusk and switches the fixture on; it switches off automatically at dawn. No manual intervention needed.

ABS and PC plastic — both rated for outdoor use and UV exposure. The black finish is consistent and doesn't fade quickly under sunlight.

The 2V, 0.2W polysilicon panel converts direct sunlight efficiently. In full sun (6–8 hours), it charges the battery completely. Heavily overcast days may result in a shorter evening runtime.

Yes — the automatic dusk-to-dawn activation eliminates dark patches along pathways and garden edges, which deters opportunistic access and makes the space safer to navigate at night.
