Before you begin

  • Mounting — installs on the door edge and the corresponding frame; placement and method depend on hinge type

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver (Phillips or flathead), drill and drill bits
  • Chisel (for mortising), screws
  • Tape measure, pencil, level or square, hammer and mallet

Step by step

  1. Mortise hinges — mark placement — top hinge 5–7 inches from the top of the door, bottom hinge 10–12 inches from the bottom, third hinge (if used) centered between them.
  2. Mortise hinges — mortise the door and frame — trace the hinge outline and chisel shallow recesses so the hinge leaf sits flush.
  3. Mortise hinges — pre-drill screw holes — place the hinge in the mortise, mark the screw locations, and drill pilot holes.
  4. Mortise hinges — attach — screw one leaf to the door edge, position the door in the frame, and secure the other leaf to the jamb.
