The Object

Grain and shadowa surface that absorbs sound

The Hjelmeland Wall Panel is cut from old ship wood — timber that has already done something before arriving on your wall, which shows in the grain variation and natural tonal shifts between strips. The mosaic layout creates a three-dimensional surface that scatters and absorbs sound rather than bouncing it, reducing echo in open-plan rooms, offices, and studios. Mount with adhesive or a nail gun; finish natural or walnut.
Why you'll love it
  • Old ship wood — natural grain variation, genuinely warm surface
  • Three-dimensional strip pattern reduces echo and improves acoustics
  • Natural and walnut finishes — suited to most interior palettes
  • Installs with adhesive or a nail gun — wall or ceiling
  • 12 x 12 cm tiles — covers large areas efficiently
Details

Three ways to install, depending on your panel — nail gun, peel-and-stick, or glue-on. Pick the one that matches what you ordered.

Before you begin

  • Prep — walls should be clean, dry, and smooth; remove dust, grease, nails, and flaky paint
  • Layout — measure and mark your starting line with a level and pencil, and lay out panels on the floor first to visualize placement

What you'll need

  • Tape measure, level, pencil or chalk line
  • Utility knife or fine-tooth saw, clean cloth
  • Caulk gun (if using adhesive), rubber roller (for peel-and-stick), brad nail gun (for nail gun install)

Step by step

  1. Nail gun — for thicker or heavier panels like wood/MDF. Locate wall studs with a stud finder and mark them.
  2. Nail gun — start at the bottom corner and align your first panel to your guidelines.
  3. Nail gun — fasten into studs — nails every 12–16".
  4. Nail gun — fit remaining panels tightly together and continue fastening. Fill nail holes with wood filler or color-matched putty. Optionally, add caulk between panels for seamless joints. Leave a 1/8" gap at edges for expansion.
  5. Peel-and-stick — for lightweight panels with pre-applied adhesive. Wipe the wall clean of dust and grease and let it dry fully. Measure and draw a level starting line.
  6. Peel-and-stick — peel and place — remove the adhesive backing from the first panel, align carefully, and press onto the wall starting at one edge.
  7. Peel-and-stick — roll it flat — use a rubber roller to apply even pressure, then continue placing panels tightly against each other. Avoid repositioning — the adhesive is strongest on first contact.
  8. Glue-on — for panels without adhesive, like solid PVC, composite, or acoustic. Clean the wall surface thoroughly.
  9. Glue-on — apply adhesive in an "S" or zig-zag pattern on the back of the panel.
  10. Glue-on — press into place — align to your guide marks and press firmly against the wall. Use painter's tape to hold it if needed.
  11. Glue-on — repeat and finish — continue with remaining panels, keeping spacing even and level. Wipe away any adhesive squeeze-out with a damp cloth. Let adhesive cure 24–48 hours before applying pressure or weight.

The making

Cut from old timberthe grain already earned

Old ship wood carries decades of movement and weathering that new timber simply cannot replicate — colour variation, micro-texture, and a grain that catches light differently across every panel. Cut into mosaic strips and laid in an alternating pattern, the assembled surface creates height variation that breaks up sound waves rather than reflecting them back. No two installations look exactly the same.

Aged timber

Old ship wood brings a grain and warmth that no new-cut board can match.

Frequently asked

Old ship wood — reclaimed timber that carries natural grain variation, colour depth, and texture from years of use. Each batch differs slightly, which is part of the material's character.

The combination of reclaimed old ship wood and a mosaic strip layout. The three-dimensional surface is both decorative and functional — it softens acoustics while creating a striking visual texture.

Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, and commercial spaces. Suitable for walls and ceilings in dry interior environments — not recommended for bathrooms or kitchens.

The raised mosaic strips create an irregular surface that scatters sound waves and absorbs some energy, reducing the flutter echo common in hard-walled rooms without specialist acoustic treatment.

Yes. Apply construction adhesive to the back of each tile and press to a clean, dry wall, or use a nail gun at the edges. Tiles are lightweight and the 30x30 cm format is easy to handle solo.

The panels reduce echo and improve room acoustics, but they do not provide structural soundproofing between rooms. For room-to-room sound isolation, additional wall treatment is required.

Dust regularly with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum. Avoid wet wiping — the wood can absorb moisture. A light application of furniture wax once a year preserves the finish.

Two finishes: natural (the raw wood tone) and walnut (a deeper brown). Both show the grain variation characteristic of old ship wood.

No. Natural wood panels are not moisture-resistant. They are for dry interior use only — avoid bathrooms, kitchens, and any area subject to steam or condensation.

Adhesive-mounted panels are difficult to remove without surface damage. Nail-gun installations can be removed more cleanly with a pry bar. Contact us with any questions before installation. Nava ships worldwide free in 15–21 business days.
