The Object

Woven by handlight filtered through rattan

The Cartaya Pendant Light is woven from natural rattan — a plant-based material that holds its shape without drying out or splitting under normal indoor conditions. The weave isn't uniform: the pattern creates small gaps that let warm light escape in every direction, so the ceiling and walls around the pendant fill with a soft, dappled wash rather than a directed beam. Four diameters from 50 to 80 cm, beige or black, adjustable cord to 1.2 m.
Why you'll love it
  • Handwoven natural rattan — each piece carries slight variation
  • Woven gaps cast a warm, dappled pattern on walls and ceiling
  • Four diameters: 50, 60, 70, and 80 cm
  • Beige or black — works in natural and dark interior palettes
  • Lightweight and easy to install — hardware included
Details

A standard hardwired ceiling install — most of it is switching off the power and matching three wires. Set your hanging height before you connect anything, and you're most of the way there.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — to a standard ceiling junction box
  • Power — hardwired to your mains supply
  • Dimming — socketed bulbs dim; integrated-LED models don't
  • Drop — arrives at 47" (1.2 m); want it shorter or longer? Just email us before it ships
  • Ceilings — flat, and most sloped (check the product specs)

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver, voltage tester, wire stripper
  • Wire nuts (included), ladder
  • Drill (only for a new junction box or non-standard ceiling)

Step by step

  1. Turn off the power — switch off the lighting circuit at the breaker, then confirm it's dead with a voltage tester.
  2. Mount the bracket — fasten the included bracket to the junction box, snug and level.
  3. Set your height — before wiring, adjust the cord, chain, or downrod to your drop and lock it at the canopy.
  4. Connect the wires — black to black, white to white, green or bare to ground. Secure each with a wire nut and tuck them into the box.
  5. Attach the fixture — line the canopy up with the bracket and fix it flush with the provided screws or caps.
  6. Add the bulbs — correct type and wattage; if dimming, check the bulbs match your wall dimmer.
  7. Power on and test.

Good to know

  • Follow your local electrical codes.
  • For high or angled ceilings, or anything complex, bring in a licensed electrician.
  • Don't over-tighten decorative parts; dust gently with a soft cloth.

The making

Rattan woventhe gaps are part of the design

The weave pattern isn't just structural — the spaces between strands are sized deliberately so that light escapes through them at an angle rather than straight down. This scatter of small, warm light points on surrounding surfaces is the pendant's secondary effect, and it changes with the size of the shade and the position of the bulb within it.

The rattan shade is lightweight and the cord mounts to a standard ceiling junction box. The hardwired E27 connection should be made by a certified electrician, but the physical installation is uncomplicated.

Natural rattan — a plant-based cane material that's woven into the shade by hand. It's lightweight, holds its form well indoors, and develops a slight warmth in tone as it ages.

Yes — rattan works across Scandinavian, coastal, bohemian, and natural interior styles. The beige finish reads warmer and more organic; the black reads more graphic and contemporary.

Yes — a 1-year warranty is included as standard, extendable to 2, 3, or 5 years. Reach out to our team after purchase to arrange the extension.

The woven gaps scatter warm light in a dappled pattern across walls and ceiling — softer than a bare bulb and more textured than a solid shade. The rattan itself adds material warmth even when the light is off.

Yes — rattan is a rapidly renewable plant material. It grows without pesticides, requires no primary processing chemicals, and produces a lightweight fixture that ships at lower carbon cost than metal or glass alternatives.

Dust with a dry cloth or a soft brush — a paintbrush works well for getting between the weave. Avoid water or damp cloths, which can cause rattan to soften or warp if it soaks through.

Not in the standard configuration — the fixture doesn't include a dimmer driver. If dimming is important, pair it with a dimmable E27 LED bulb and a compatible dimmer circuit.

Yes — ceiling canopy, cord grip, and fixings are all included. The E27 bulb is not included; source a warm-white LED for the most natural effect through the rattan weave.
