The Object

Brassdrawn into a rounded oval

The Cambil stretches solid brass into an elongated oval, the ends softly rounded so it sits comfortably under the fingers. Its scale stays subtle, but the form is distinctive enough to register as a considered detail rather than filler hardware. Over time, handling brings out the brass's own patina, deepening with use.
Why you'll love it
  • Crafted from solid brass — durable and naturally patinas
  • Elongated oval form with balanced rounded ends
  • Smooth, tactile surface, comfortable in the hand
  • Suits kitchens, wardrobes, drawers, and vanities
  • Subtle in scale, distinctive enough to notice
Details

No wiring here — just careful measuring, drilling, and mounting. Mortice locks take a bit more patience than a simple knob.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — surface installation on doors, drawers, or cabinetry; check your product's dimensions for placement and drilling points

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead), drill and drill bits, Allen key
  • Tape measure, pencil, level
  • Chisel (for mortice lock installation)
  • Screws and anchors, safety goggles

Step by step

  1. Cabinet hardware — mark drilling points — use a tape measure and pencil; a template helps for uniformity across multiple pieces.
  2. Cabinet hardware — drill holes — use a bit matched to the screw diameter, keeping the drill straight.
  3. Cabinet hardware — mount — insert screws from inside the cabinet or drawer, secure the hardware on the front face, and tighten without overtightening.
  4. Cabinet hardware — align and inspect — confirm straightness and spacing before fully securing.
  5. Thumb lock or dummy handle — confirm orientation — determine left- or right-hand door swing and adjust as needed.
  6. Thumb lock or dummy handle — mark installation height — typically 36–38 inches from the floor to the handle center; align the mounting plate.
  7. Thumb lock or dummy handle — drill and attach — drill pilot holes and secure the backplate and handle with the included screws. Dummy handles install directly, no latch mechanism.
  8. Thumb lock only — install the strike plate — mark the latch location on the door frame, chisel a recess if needed, and screw the strike plate in.
  9. Mortice lock — cut the mortice pocket — use a chisel and drill to create a cavity in the door edge, following the provided measurements.
  10. Mortice lock — insert the lock body — fit it into the cavity and attach through the faceplate with screws.
  11. Mortice lock — install the handle — align the spindle through the lock, attach handles on both sides, and tighten with a screwdriver or Allen key.
  12. Mortice lock — install the cylinder (if applicable) — insert the key cylinder and secure with the cylinder screw from the door edge.
  13. Mortice lock — mount the strike plate — align with the latch mechanism and secure to the door frame.

Good to know

  • Double-check measurements before drilling.
  • Use a level for consistent alignment across multiple units.
  • If you're unfamiliar with mortice installation, consult a locksmith or professional.
  • Make sure all moving parts operate smoothly before final tightening.
  • Dummy handles are decorative or pull-only — they don't engage latches or locks.

On the form

An ovalsoftened at each end

The Cambil's silhouette stretches longer than a standard round knob, its rounded ends keeping the profile gentle rather than sharp. Solid brass gives it real weight in the hand, and the smooth surface is built to develop its own patina with regular use. It's a quiet detail that adds depth without asking for attention.

A modern-yet-timeless silhouette — a subtle sculptural detail that fits both contemporary and classic cabinetry without pulling too far toward either extreme.

Kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, drawers, and bathroom vanities — anywhere you want a considered brass detail that reads as more than standard hardware.

Its elongated oval shape with softly rounded ends sets it apart from a standard round or square knob, giving it a quietly distinctive silhouette.

Yes — solid brass construction gives it real weight and a satisfying grip, so it never feels like a lightweight or hollow stand-in.

Brass or chrome finishes, giving you the choice between a warmer metal tone or a cooler, more neutral one depending on your cabinetry.

Yes — its clean, balanced form suits modern spaces just as well as classic ones, thanks to the restrained oval shape and smooth finish.

No — its subtle scale is designed to add detail without dominating the cabinet face, letting the form register quietly rather than demand attention.

Both — it works as everyday hardware while adding a quiet architectural detail to the cabinetry, so function and design work together rather than against each other.

A calm, elongated silhouette that reads as a deliberate detail rather than incidental hardware, adding a small but noticeable point of interest to any cabinet front.
