The Object

Hammerednot polished smooth

The Birkende is solid brass with a hammered face — each dimple pressed by machine into a pattern that improves grip and catches the light differently at every angle. Three form options: a round drawer pull, a round knob, or a T-bar pull in eight lengths up to 27 cm. The brass is finished to resist tarnishing — it stays gold, not green.
Why you'll love it
  • Solid brass — weighty and built for daily use
  • Hammered texture — improves grip, catches light beautifully
  • Tarnish-resistant finish — stays gold through years of use
  • Three forms: round pull, round knob, T-bar in eight lengths
  • Suits kitchens, bathrooms, wardrobes, and cabinetry
Details

No wiring here — just careful measuring, drilling, and mounting. Mortice locks take a bit more patience than a simple knob.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — surface installation on doors, drawers, or cabinetry; check your product's dimensions for placement and drilling points

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead), drill and drill bits, Allen key
  • Tape measure, pencil, level
  • Chisel (for mortice lock installation)
  • Screws and anchors, safety goggles

Step by step

  1. Cabinet hardware — mark drilling points — use a tape measure and pencil; a template helps for uniformity across multiple pieces.
  2. Cabinet hardware — drill holes — use a bit matched to the screw diameter, keeping the drill straight.
  3. Cabinet hardware — mount — insert screws from inside the cabinet or drawer, secure the hardware on the front face, and tighten without overtightening.
  4. Cabinet hardware — align and inspect — confirm straightness and spacing before fully securing.
  5. Thumb lock or dummy handle — confirm orientation — determine left- or right-hand door swing and adjust as needed.
  6. Thumb lock or dummy handle — mark installation height — typically 36–38 inches from the floor to the handle center; align the mounting plate.
  7. Thumb lock or dummy handle — drill and attach — drill pilot holes and secure the backplate and handle with the included screws. Dummy handles install directly, no latch mechanism.
  8. Thumb lock only — install the strike plate — mark the latch location on the door frame, chisel a recess if needed, and screw the strike plate in.
  9. Mortice lock — cut the mortice pocket — use a chisel and drill to create a cavity in the door edge, following the provided measurements.
  10. Mortice lock — insert the lock body — fit it into the cavity and attach through the faceplate with screws.
  11. Mortice lock — install the handle — align the spindle through the lock, attach handles on both sides, and tighten with a screwdriver or Allen key.
  12. Mortice lock — install the cylinder (if applicable) — insert the key cylinder and secure with the cylinder screw from the door edge.
  13. Mortice lock — mount the strike plate — align with the latch mechanism and secure to the door frame.

Good to know

  • Double-check measurements before drilling.
  • Use a level for consistent alignment across multiple units.
  • If you're unfamiliar with mortice installation, consult a locksmith or professional.
  • Make sure all moving parts operate smoothly before final tightening.
  • Dummy handles are decorative or pull-only — they don't engage latches or locks.

The making

Each dimple pressedthe whole surface textured

The hammered pattern is pressed into the brass face before finishing, so the texture is in the metal, not a surface coating. The result holds its character through years of handling — the finish resists tarnishing, and the grip only improves with use.

Frequently asked

Solid brass throughout — body, pull surface, and mounting stem. No hollow fill, no zinc alloy substitute. The weight and warmth you feel comes from the brass itself.

The hammered finish is pressed directly into the brass face before polishing, creating a pattern of small dimples that catches light at different angles and adds real grip to the surface.

Kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanity drawers, wardrobe doors, sideboards, and any cabinetry where you want a textured brass detail. The tarnish-resistant finish suits humid environments.

Yes — the gold finish is treated to resist oxidation and tarnishing. Unlike unlacquered brass, it won't develop a green patina; the surface stays warm gold through regular daily use.

Positively — the dimples add grip, so the pull is easier to open with wet or dry hands. The texture doesn't catch dirt or crumbs any more than a smooth surface.

Modern, transitional, and classic interiors all work — the hammered texture reads as artisanal without being rustic. It pairs particularly well with shaker-style cabinetry and natural stone worktops.

Three forms: round drawer pull at D4.3–4.8 cm, round knob at D2.5–3.0 cm, and T-bar pulls in eight lengths from 5.1 cm to 27 cm. Mounting hardware for standard cabinet holes is included.

Yes — each piece comes with the mounting screw. Align with your existing cabinet hole (or drill a new one), pass the screw through, and tighten. Most installs take under two minutes per handle.

Yes — the tarnish-resistant finish handles bathroom humidity without degrading. Wipe dry after prolonged water contact to extend the finish life.

The Birkende is available in gold (hammered). If you need a different finish — antique brass, black, or matte — contact our team before ordering; we may be able to accommodate bespoke requests.
