The Object

Louvres cut the glarebrass holds the weather

The Ranua Step Light recesses into a stair riser or garden wall and throws a controlled wash of light downward — the louvred face keeps the beam tight and cuts glare so the light improves visibility without creating a blinding spot at eye level. Cast from solid brass, it weathers slowly and gracefully; the louvres resist clogging and are easy to wipe clean. Two lengths, dimmable on request.
Why you'll love it
  • Cast brass — resists corrosion and ages well outdoors
  • Louvred face controls beam direction, cuts glare
  • Integrated LED, 50,000-hour life — no bulb changes
  • Two sizes: 15.2 cm and 24.1 cm length
  • Dimmable on request · wall-mount installation
Details

The install depends on your mount type — trimless, recessed, semi-recessed, surface, or track — so confirm which one you have before you start.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — trimless, recessed, semi-recessed, surface-mounted, or track-mounted; confirm the type in your product listing
  • Ceilings — most models suit drywall; some also work with concrete or drop ceilings, check the technical documentation
  • Dimming — many designs dim when paired with compatible drivers and wall dimmers
  • Power — hardwired, connects directly to a ceiling electrical junction
  • Trimless — may need professional finishing or flush-mount drywall work
  • Track — installs onto a compatible rail system; check your product's specification for track type

What you'll need

  • Drill, keyhole or drywall saw (for recessed or trimless)
  • Screwdriver, voltage tester, wire stripper
  • Wire nuts (included with most fixtures), screws and wall anchors (for surface mounting)
  • Level, measuring tape or pencil

Step by step

  1. Turn off the power — at the breaker panel, and confirm with a voltage tester.
  2. Prepare the ceiling opening (recessed and trimless only) — mark your opening with the provided template and cut carefully with a drywall saw or hole cutter. Trimless models need deeper space and extra setup for a seamless finish.
  3. Install the mounting hardware or fixture housing — recessed and trimless designs insert into the ceiling cavity and secure with spring clips or fasteners (trimless may need joist framing); semi-recessed fixtures partially install per the included instructions; surface-mounted downlights attach directly with screws and wall anchors; track fixtures need a compatible track system first, then lock into place.
  4. Connect the wiring — black to black, white to white, green or bare to ground. Secure each with a wire nut and tuck neatly back into the housing or box.
  5. Final assembly — trimless fixtures get mudded and feathered into the ceiling plane before painting; recessed, semi-recessed, and surface fixtures finish by twisting or snapping the trim or body into place; track lights get positioned and rotated along the rail after locking in.
  6. Restore power and test — use the wall switch or dimmer to verify proper operation.

Good to know

  • Professional installation is recommended for trimless or recessed downlights, especially with mudding or insulation involved.
  • Follow local electrical codes and regulations.
  • Use only compatible drivers and dimmers for your fixture.
  • Keep safe spacing from insulation in ceiling cavities to prevent overheating.

The making

Cast brassthe louvres are part of the form

Cast brass is heavier and more dimensional than sheet metal — the Ranua's louvred face is cast as a single piece with the housing, not added as a secondary component. That means the louvres have consistent depth and spacing, which is what makes the beam control reliable: each slat deflects exactly the same amount of light as its neighbours, so the wash across the stair surface is even from end to end.

Innovative engineering · intelligent design
Three things that make the Ranua reliable outdoors, season after season.
Cast Brass

Single-piece cast brass construction — the louvres are integral, not added on.

Glare-Free

Louvres direct the light downward only — no spill into the eye at stair height.

Long Life

Integrated LED rated 50,000 hours — nothing to replace in outdoor conditions.

Frequently asked

Cast brass throughout — body, louvred face, and mounting flange. Brass is a natural choice for outdoor step lights: it resists corrosion, weathers slowly, and the patina that develops over time reads as quality rather than neglect.

The horizontal louvred face is the defining feature — it controls exactly where the light goes. The louvres angle the beam downward onto the step surface and prevent it from projecting upward into the eye. The housing is cast as a unified form, not assembled from parts.

Yes — solid cast brass is inherently corrosion-resistant and performs well in outdoor conditions including rain, frost, and UV exposure. The integrated LED is sealed within the housing.

Glare control and beam precision. The louvres limit the light spread to a tight downward angle — improving stair visibility without creating a blinding spot at shin or eye level. They also make the face easy to wipe clean.

The light mounts flush to a wall surface or recesses into a stair riser using the included hardware. Hardwired — a certified electrician should make the connection. Nava ships free worldwide in approximately 15–21 business days.

At 3W and 330 lm per unit, it delivers focused illumination of the tread surface directly below — enough for safe foot placement in the dark. For longer stair runs, fit one unit per step or every other step depending on the height of each riser.

Very little — the brass body is self-maintaining outdoors and the integrated LED requires no bulb changes. Wipe the louvred face periodically with a damp cloth to clear any accumulated debris.

An integrated LED — sealed into the fixture and rated for 50,000 hours of use. There are no bulbs to replace; the LED is the light source for the life of the fitting.

Natural brass — a single finish that suits both contemporary and traditional outdoor settings. The brass will develop a warm patina with outdoor exposure, which most people find preferable to the original bright finish.

Yes, intentionally — the louvres narrow the coverage angle to focus light onto the step surface below the fixture rather than spreading it widely. This is what prevents glare. The Ranua comes with a 1-year warranty, extendable, and 14-day returns.
