Installation Guide

The install depends on your mount type — trimless, recessed, semi-recessed, surface, or track — so confirm which one you have before you start.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — trimless, recessed, semi-recessed, surface-mounted, or track-mounted; confirm the type in your product listing
  • Ceilings — most models suit drywall; some also work with concrete or drop ceilings, check the technical documentation
  • Dimming — many designs dim when paired with compatible drivers and wall dimmers
  • Power — hardwired, connects directly to a ceiling electrical junction
  • Trimless — may need professional finishing or flush-mount drywall work
  • Track — installs onto a compatible rail system; check your product's specification for track type

What you'll need

  • Drill, keyhole or drywall saw (for recessed or trimless)
  • Screwdriver, voltage tester, wire stripper
  • Wire nuts (included with most fixtures), screws and wall anchors (for surface mounting)
  • Level, measuring tape or pencil

Step by step

  1. Turn off the power — at the breaker panel, and confirm with a voltage tester.
  2. Prepare the ceiling opening (recessed and trimless only) — mark your opening with the provided template and cut carefully with a drywall saw or hole cutter. Trimless models need deeper space and extra setup for a seamless finish.
  3. Install the mounting hardware or fixture housing — recessed and trimless designs insert into the ceiling cavity and secure with spring clips or fasteners (trimless may need joist framing); semi-recessed fixtures partially install per the included instructions; surface-mounted downlights attach directly with screws and wall anchors; track fixtures need a compatible track system first, then lock into place.
  4. Connect the wiring — black to black, white to white, green or bare to ground. Secure each with a wire nut and tuck neatly back into the housing or box.
  5. Final assembly — trimless fixtures get mudded and feathered into the ceiling plane before painting; recessed, semi-recessed, and surface fixtures finish by twisting or snapping the trim or body into place; track lights get positioned and rotated along the rail after locking in.
  6. Restore power and test — use the wall switch or dimmer to verify proper operation.

Good to know

  • Professional installation is recommended for trimless or recessed downlights, especially with mudding or insulation involved.
  • Follow local electrical codes and regulations.
  • Use only compatible drivers and dimmers for your fixture.
  • Keep safe spacing from insulation in ceiling cavities to prevent overheating.

45-degree arc — light follows the angle

The tilt mechanism sits inside the housing so the pivot point is at the ceiling rather than projecting downward. This keeps the fixture flush against the ceiling regardless of angle, making it effective in rooms where a track light would feel too industrial. The aluminium body is cool to the touch during operation.

Innovative engineering. Intelligent design.

Precise aim

45-degree tilt directs each head to artwork, a work surface, or a seating area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are used to make the Gram Downlight?

The housing is aluminium — lightweight, durable, and cool to the touch during operation. Aluminium also dissipates heat from the integrated LED effectively, which contributes to the LED's long service life.

Is the Gram Downlight available in different colors?

Yes — black and white. Both are consistent across the housing and ceiling plate. Black suits contemporary and industrial interiors; white blends into lighter ceilings for a less visible fixture when the light is off.

Does the Gram Downlight have an adjustable feature?

Yes — each head pivots up to 45 degrees from vertical. This lets you direct the beam at a specific surface, object, or area rather than lighting from directly overhead. The adjustment is simple — reposition by hand.

Is the Gram Downlight dimmable?

Yes, on request — configure it at checkout and the fixture ships dimmer-compatible. It works with a standard wall dimmer switch. Dimming down also extends the integrated LED's lifespan under daily use.

What lighting temperatures are available for the Gram Downlight?

The integrated LED is set at a fixed colour temperature from the factory. If you require a specific colour temperature — warm white (2700–3000K), neutral (4000K), or daylight (5000–6500K) — contact us before ordering and we'll advise on available options.

Where is the Gram Downlight suitable for use?

Living rooms, kitchens, hallways, offices, and commercial spaces. The directional capability makes it particularly effective for accent lighting over artwork or architectural features, and for task lighting over kitchen worktops or desks.

What is the voltage range of the Gram Downlight?

90–260V — compatible with residential and commercial electrical systems worldwide. No transformer or adaptor is needed for standard ceiling installation in North America, Europe, Australia, or most other regions.

What kind of light source does the Gram Downlight use?

An integrated LED — built into the aluminium housing. No separate bulb is needed and none is user-replaceable. The integrated design keeps the fixture compact and ensures a clean flush appearance at the ceiling.

How energy-efficient is the Gram Downlight?

Integrated LEDs are among the most energy-efficient light sources available. The single-head version delivers 1650 lm at 15W — equivalent task light to older 100W incandescents at around 15% of the energy draw.

Why should I choose the Gram Downlight for my space?

If you want precise directional light in a flush, minimal housing — without the visual weight of a track system — the Gram is the right choice. The 45-degree tilt covers most accent and task lighting angles from a single ceiling mount.
