Installation Guide

No wiring here — just careful measuring, drilling, and mounting. Mortice locks take a bit more patience than a simple knob.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — surface installation on doors, drawers, or cabinetry; check your product's dimensions for placement and drilling points

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and flathead), drill and drill bits, Allen key
  • Tape measure, pencil, level
  • Chisel (for mortice lock installation)
  • Screws and anchors, safety goggles

Step by step

  1. Cabinet hardware — mark drilling points — use a tape measure and pencil; a template helps for uniformity across multiple pieces.
  2. Cabinet hardware — drill holes — use a bit matched to the screw diameter, keeping the drill straight.
  3. Cabinet hardware — mount — insert screws from inside the cabinet or drawer, secure the hardware on the front face, and tighten without overtightening.
  4. Cabinet hardware — align and inspect — confirm straightness and spacing before fully securing.
  5. Thumb lock or dummy handle — confirm orientation — determine left- or right-hand door swing and adjust as needed.
  6. Thumb lock or dummy handle — mark installation height — typically 36–38 inches from the floor to the handle center; align the mounting plate.
  7. Thumb lock or dummy handle — drill and attach — drill pilot holes and secure the backplate and handle with the included screws. Dummy handles install directly, no latch mechanism.
  8. Thumb lock only — install the strike plate — mark the latch location on the door frame, chisel a recess if needed, and screw the strike plate in.
  9. Mortice lock — cut the mortice pocket — use a chisel and drill to create a cavity in the door edge, following the provided measurements.
  10. Mortice lock — insert the lock body — fit it into the cavity and attach through the faceplate with screws.
  11. Mortice lock — install the handle — align the spindle through the lock, attach handles on both sides, and tighten with a screwdriver or Allen key.
  12. Mortice lock — install the cylinder (if applicable) — insert the key cylinder and secure with the cylinder screw from the door edge.
  13. Mortice lock — mount the strike plate — align with the latch mechanism and secure to the door frame.

Good to know

  • Double-check measurements before drilling.
  • Use a level for consistent alignment across multiple units.
  • If you're unfamiliar with mortice installation, consult a locksmith or professional.
  • Make sure all moving parts operate smoothly before final tightening.
  • Dummy handles are decorative or pull-only — they don't engage latches or locks.

Brass — a surface that becomes yours

Solid brass is one of the few materials that records use without degrading. The Ardeche ships polished and precise. Give it months and it maps your morning exits, late-night arrivals, the paths you take through your own home. That patina is not a flaw — it is the point.

Innovative engineering. Intelligent design.

Brass core

Machined from solid brass with no filler alloys — weighty, corrosion-resistant, built for decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are used to make the Ardeche Handle?

Solid brass throughout — no plastic internals, no filler alloys. The knurled grip, rosette, and latch mechanism are all brass. That consistency is what gives it the weight and feel of a quality piece of hardware.

What finishes are available for the Ardeche Handle?

Three finishes: polished Brass, Vintage Brass (a warmer, antiqued tone), and Night Black. Each is applied to the same solid brass base, so the underlying material quality is identical across all three.

What design options are available for the backplate?

Square or round rosette. The square plate gives a clean geometric look; the round reads softer and more classical. Both sit flush to the door and use the same fixing hardware — it's purely an aesthetic choice.

What types of locking options are available for this handle?

Four configurations: Privacy (locks from inside, for bathrooms and bedrooms), Passage (free-turning, no lock — for hallways and closets), Mortice Lock with Keys (keyed entry), and Dummy (pull-only, no latch — for decorative or bi-fold doors).

Is the knurled texture purely decorative, or does it offer a functional benefit?

Functional first. The knurled pattern creates mechanical grip so the lever turns confidently even with wet or soapy hands. The visual effect — the way it catches light — is a byproduct of that engineering decision, not the reason for it.

Is this handle suitable for both interior and exterior doors?

Designed primarily for interior doors, where it performs best. For sheltered exterior doors the solid brass holds up well; for fully exposed applications, confirm with a joiner. We ship worldwide free, typically 15–21 business days.

Can the Ardeche Handle be used for different door thicknesses?

The handle accommodates standard door thicknesses. If your door is non-standard — thicker than 55 mm or thinner than 35 mm — contact us before ordering and we can advise on spindle length and latch depth.

What style of interior decor does this handle complement?

The Ardeche reads cleanly in modern, transitional, and industrial interiors. In Vintage Brass it also fits warmer, classical spaces. The knurled cylinder is a strong enough form to hold its own in minimal rooms without reading as decorative.

Why are some parts shipped in Brass with the Vintage Brass finish?

Vintage Brass is a surface treatment applied to a standard brass substrate. Small internal components — spindles, fixing screws — are left in natural brass since they're not visible in use. This has no effect on the handle's appearance or performance.

What is the primary design feature of this handle?

The knurled grip cylinder. It gives the Ardeche its tactile character and recognisable silhouette. The knurling is precision-machined — not applied as a texture overlay — so it wears evenly and holds its sharpness over years of daily contact.
