Installation Guide

The install depends on your mount type — trimless, recessed, semi-recessed, surface, or track — so confirm which one you have before you start.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — trimless, recessed, semi-recessed, surface-mounted, or track-mounted; confirm the type in your product listing
  • Ceilings — most models suit drywall; some also work with concrete or drop ceilings, check the technical documentation
  • Dimming — many designs dim when paired with compatible drivers and wall dimmers
  • Power — hardwired, connects directly to a ceiling electrical junction
  • Trimless — may need professional finishing or flush-mount drywall work
  • Track — installs onto a compatible rail system; check your product's specification for track type

What you'll need

  • Drill, keyhole or drywall saw (for recessed or trimless)
  • Screwdriver, voltage tester, wire stripper
  • Wire nuts (included with most fixtures), screws and wall anchors (for surface mounting)
  • Level, measuring tape or pencil

Step by step

  1. Turn off the power — at the breaker panel, and confirm with a voltage tester.
  2. Prepare the ceiling opening (recessed and trimless only) — mark your opening with the provided template and cut carefully with a drywall saw or hole cutter. Trimless models need deeper space and extra setup for a seamless finish.
  3. Install the mounting hardware or fixture housing — recessed and trimless designs insert into the ceiling cavity and secure with spring clips or fasteners (trimless may need joist framing); semi-recessed fixtures partially install per the included instructions; surface-mounted downlights attach directly with screws and wall anchors; track fixtures need a compatible track system first, then lock into place.
  4. Connect the wiring — black to black, white to white, green or bare to ground. Secure each with a wire nut and tuck neatly back into the housing or box.
  5. Final assembly — trimless fixtures get mudded and feathered into the ceiling plane before painting; recessed, semi-recessed, and surface fixtures finish by twisting or snapping the trim or body into place; track lights get positioned and rotated along the rail after locking in.
  6. Restore power and test — use the wall switch or dimmer to verify proper operation.

Good to know

  • Professional installation is recommended for trimless or recessed downlights, especially with mudding or insulation involved.
  • Follow local electrical codes and regulations.
  • Use only compatible drivers and dimmers for your fixture.
  • Keep safe spacing from insulation in ceiling cavities to prevent overheating.

Aluminium bar — compact, ceiling-flush

The Rodby is built from extruded aluminium — light and thin, but solid enough to hold its line across a long ceiling run. The rectangular profile keeps the housing unobtrusive: when it's off, it reads as a clean strip; when it's on, the light takes over and the fixture disappears.

Innovative engineering. Intelligent design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What material is the Rodby Downlight made of?

High-quality aluminium — lightweight but solid, with a matte finish in black or white. The slim profile sits close to the ceiling and holds its look over time without fading or warping.

What lighting options are available for the Rodby Downlight?

Two beam angles: spotlight for a focused, directed beam, and floodlight for a broader ambient wash. Both are available in all four bar lengths — choose based on how you want to use the space.

Is the Rodby Downlight dimmable?

Yes, optionally — dimming is configured to order. Let us know when you purchase and we'll set it up before shipping.

In what colours is the Rodby Downlight available?

Black and white. Both finishes are designed to sit flush with the ceiling — black disappears into darker ceilings, white into lighter ones.

Can the Rodby Downlight be used in residential and commercial spaces?

Yes — the clean, minimal form suits kitchens, offices, retail spaces, hallways, and open-plan living rooms equally well. Scale up the head count for larger runs.

What is the difference between the spotlight and floodlight versions of the Rodby Downlight?

The spotlight uses a narrower beam angle for directed, focused illumination — good for task areas, artwork, or accent lighting. The floodlight spreads a wider wash — better for ambient or general room lighting.

How easy is the Rodby Downlight to install?

It's hardwired to the ceiling junction box — a straightforward process for a certified electrician. The fixture is sloped-ceiling compatible, so angled ceilings aren't a problem.

Is the Rodby Downlight energy efficient?

Yes — integrated LED throughout, from 10W for 5 heads to 40W for 20 heads. Efficient by design, with no bulbs to replace.

Can the Rodby Downlight be used in damp areas like bathrooms?

The Rodby is an interior downlight and is not rated for wet areas. For bathroom use, a fixture with a suitable IP rating is required — our team can advise on alternatives.

What is the lifespan of the Rodby Downlight?

The integrated LEDs are rated for long-term use — well suited to spaces that run lighting for extended hours. Nava covers the Rodby with a 1-year warranty, extendable, and free worldwide shipping takes 15–21 business days.
