Installation Guide

A standard hardwired ceiling install — most of it is switching off the power and matching three wires. Set your hanging height before you connect anything, and you're most of the way there.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — to a standard ceiling junction box
  • Power — hardwired to your mains supply
  • Dimming — socketed bulbs dim; integrated-LED models don't
  • Drop — arrives at 47" (1.2 m); want it shorter or longer? Just email us before it ships
  • Ceilings — flat, and most sloped (check the product specs)

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver, voltage tester, wire stripper
  • Wire nuts (included), ladder
  • Drill (only for a new junction box or non-standard ceiling)

Step by step

  1. Turn off the power — switch off the lighting circuit at the breaker, then confirm it's dead with a voltage tester.
  2. Mount the bracket — fasten the included bracket to the junction box, snug and level.
  3. Set your height — before wiring, adjust the cord, chain, or downrod to your drop and lock it at the canopy.
  4. Connect the wires — black to black, white to white, green or bare to ground. Secure each with a wire nut and tuck them into the box.
  5. Attach the fixture — line the canopy up with the bracket and fix it flush with the provided screws or caps.
  6. Add the bulbs — correct type and wattage; if dimming, check the bulbs match your wall dimmer.
  7. Power on and test.

  • Follow your local electrical codes.
  • For high or angled ceilings, or anything complex, bring in a licensed electrician.
  • Don't over-tighten decorative parts; dust gently with a soft cloth.

Arms extended — geometry holds the light in place

The Bernkastel's radial structure draws the eye out from the centre in equal intervals — ten or thirteen arms at equal angles, each terminating in a glass shade. The Bauhaus influence is in the refusal to add: no crystal drops, no decorative detail, no fringe. The polished chrome reflects the room back at a slight angle, making the space feel larger.

What is the installation process?

The Bernkastel is pipe-erected — it mounts to the ceiling via a threaded pipe rather than a wire, holding the radial frame firmly in position. A junction box is required and professional installation is strongly recommended.

How long does the fixture last?

The included E27 LEDs are rated at 50,000 hours. The iron frame and chrome finish are built for the long term — with normal care the fixture should remain in service well beyond the LEDs' first replacement cycle.

Is the fixture height adjustable?

Yes — the pipe drop adjusts to a maximum of 30cm from the ceiling plate. This is a relatively short drop, so the Bernkastel works best in rooms with standard ceiling heights up to approximately 3m.

What materials is it made from?

The frame is iron with a polished chrome finish; the shades are clear glass. Both are chosen for durability and for how they maintain their finish without special treatment over the years.

Does it come with a warranty?

Yes — a 1-year warranty is included from the date of delivery. Extensions to 2 or 3 years are available on request — contact us after purchase to set that up easily.

How does it handle temperature changes?

Iron and chrome are both stable across typical indoor temperature ranges — the finish won't crack, peel, or discolour from normal seasonal variation in a conditioned interior environment.

Can it be mounted on both ceiling and wall?

No — the Bernkastel is designed exclusively for ceiling installation via the pipe mount. Wall installation is not supported by the fixture's radial structure or included hardware.

Is the chrome finish durable?

Yes — polished chrome on iron is a robust finish. It resists scratching better than most paint finishes and can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which would remove the polish.

What voltage does the LED system support?

90–260V — compatible with standard household wiring in most countries worldwide. The LEDs are universal voltage, so no transformer is required for any standard installation.

How do I turn it on?

The Bernkastel connects to your standard ceiling circuit — turned on and off at your wall switch. If you order with dimming, a compatible wall dimmer is required and should be installed by an electrician.
