Installation Guide

A standard hardwired ceiling install — most of it is switching off the power and matching three wires. Set your hanging height before you connect anything, and you're most of the way there.

Before you begin

  • Mounting — to a standard ceiling junction box
  • Power — hardwired to your mains supply
  • Dimming — socketed bulbs dim; integrated-LED models don't
  • Drop — arrives at 47" (1.2 m); want it shorter or longer? Just email us before it ships
  • Ceilings — flat, and most sloped (check the product specs)

What you'll need

  • Screwdriver, voltage tester, wire stripper
  • Wire nuts (included), ladder
  • Drill (only for a new junction box or non-standard ceiling)

Step by step

  1. Turn off the power — switch off the lighting circuit at the breaker, then confirm it's dead with a voltage tester.
  2. Mount the bracket — fasten the included bracket to the junction box, snug and level.
  3. Set your height — before wiring, adjust the cord, chain, or downrod to your drop and lock it at the canopy.
  4. Connect the wires — black to black, white to white, green or bare to ground. Secure each with a wire nut and tuck them into the box.
  5. Attach the fixture — line the canopy up with the bracket and fix it flush with the provided screws or caps.
  6. Add the bulbs — correct type and wattage; if dimming, check the bulbs match your wall dimmer.
  7. Power on and test.

  • Follow your local electrical codes.
  • For high or angled ceilings, or anything complex, bring in a licensed electrician.
  • Don't over-tighten decorative parts; dust gently with a soft cloth.

Each tassel tied — then built into the form

The hemp rope is first knotted into individual tassels, then worked into the shade structure from the top ring down. The irregularity in the knots is inherent to the handmade process — no two shades are identical in their weave pattern. Light filters through the gaps rather than being diffused by a solid surface.

What materials are used in the construction?

The shade is natural hemp rope, hand-knotted into tassels and woven into shape. The mounting hardware and cord fitting are metal. No synthetic fibres are used in the shade itself.

How long does the installation take?

The shade attaches to the cord fitting in minutes. The ceiling canopy mounts to a standard junction box — allow 30–60 minutes including cord adjustment. A certified electrician should handle the mains connection.

Is the hemp rope treated for durability?

Natural hemp is inherently resistant to mildew and UV degradation in indoor conditions. The rope is not chemically treated, so it retains a natural texture and scent that fades over the first few weeks.

Can it be used in a commercial setting?

Yes — it works well in cafes, boutique hotels, and restaurants. The wide voltage range and hardwired installation are compatible with commercial electrical systems.

What type of light bulb is compatible?

Standard E27 screw base — any LED bulb up to 15W fits. Warm white (2700–3000K) complements the natural hemp tone best. Bulb is not included.

Is there a warranty available?

Yes — a 1-year warranty is included as standard, extendable to 2, 3, or 5 years on request. Returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery for items that arrive damaged or differ from the listing.

How do I clean and maintain it?

Dust lightly with a dry soft brush or compressed air. Do not expose to moisture or steam — natural hemp is not water-resistant. Avoid placing in rooms with high humidity.

Is it suitable for outdoor use?

No — the natural hemp rope is for indoor use only. Humidity or rain would degrade the fibres. It works beautifully in covered patios if air circulation keeps moisture low, but not in direct weather.

Does it require professional installation?

For hardwired mains connection, yes — a certified electrician is recommended. The shade and cord assembly itself doesn't require any specialist skills.

Are there any special care instructions?

Keep away from open flames or direct heat sources. The hemp is a natural fibre — treat it with the same care as linen or cotton in a soft furnishing context. Avoid pulling or stretching the tassels.
